eSIM Not Working? Fix It Fast (No Service, Activation, Data)
If your eSIM isn’t working abroad, you’re usually not “doing travel wrong”. You’re just stuck in one of a few boring failure modes: wrong line selected, roaming off, network stuck, or APN settings being weird. This is the checklist I use to get back online fast — without turning it into a two-hour meltdown.

If you need internet in the next 5 minutes, do this:
Turn Airplane Mode on → wait 10 seconds → off
Restart your phone
Settings → Mobile Data: make sure the eSIM is selected for Mobile Data
Turn Data Roaming ON (for the travel eSIM line)
Settings → Network Selection: switch to manual and try 2 networks
If it still doesn’t work, jump to APN settings below
If you’re in Japan: skip the guessing and use the Japan links at the bottom.

The 6 most common reasons your eSIM “doesn’t work”
It’s installed but not switched on (easy to miss)
Wrong line is selected for Mobile Data (your phone is using your home SIM)
Data roaming is OFF (yes, even for travel eSIMs)
Network selection is stuck (automatic picks the wrong partner network)
APN is missing/wrong (the silent killer)
Activation failed because you tried it on weak Wi‑Fi or the provider had a moment
Fix 1 — “No service” (no bars / can’t connect)
Do these in order:
Confirm the eSIM line is ON
Mobile Data → select the eSIM
Turn Data Roaming ON
Network Selection → Manual → try another network
If still dead: Reset Network Settings (last resort before deleting anything)
Fix 2 — eSIM won’t activate / “Unable to activate”
Use stable Wi‑Fi (activation on weak Wi‑Fi is chaos)
Set Date & Time to automatic
Temporarily turn off any VPN (if you’re using one)
If you have an app-based install option, try that instead of re-scanning QR codes
Don’t delete the eSIM yet — if you delete it, you may lose the easiest path back
Fix 3 — eSIM activated but data doesn’t work
Toggle Mobile Data off/on
Toggle Data Roaming off/on
Switch 4G/5G (sometimes forcing 4G stabilises it)
Try manual network selection again
Check you haven’t accidentally hit a plan limit / expired the plan
APN settings (the bit that makes people spiral)
APN is basically the “route” your phone uses to access mobile data. If it’s blank or wrong, you can have signal but no usable internet.
What to do:
Check whether your eSIM has an APN requirement (provider instructions)
If the APN field is blank and your provider gave you one, add it exactly
Avoid random APNs from forums unless they’re from the provider itself
If you’re not sure: do the simpler fixes above first. APN is not step one.
Hotspot/tethering not working
Make sure you’re not connected to Wi‑Fi while trying to hotspot
Restart both devices
Some eSIM plans block tethering (annoying, but common)
If hotspot matters for work, don’t assume — verify before you rely on it
When to stop troubleshooting (and what to do instead)
If you’ve done the 5‑minute checklist, tried manual networks, and checked APN, and you’re still offline, stop burning time. Use temporary Wi‑Fi, then switch to a plan/method that actually works.
Use code STAFA10 for 10% off.

FAQs
Do I need data roaming on for an eSIM?
Usually, yes, for most travel eSIMs, data roaming needs to be ON for the eSIM line.
Will deleting the eSIM fix it?
Sometimes, but it’s a last resort. Delete it too early and you can make it harder to recover.
Why does it work in one country but not another?
Partner networks differ by country. Manual network selection often fixes this.
Can I use two eSIMs?
Yes (device-dependent). Just make sure the correct one is selected for Mobile Data.
