Ubigi Hotspot in Japan: Can You Tether? (And Fixes If It Won’t Work)
You can use Ubigi as a hotspot in Japan, I’ve done it on both iPhone and Android, but tethering is also the first thing to randomly break when you’re tired, jet-lagged, and just trying to get your laptop online. This guide is the fast, practical fix list (not theory).

Quick answer (read this first)
Yes — Ubigi hotspot/tethering works in Japan on most phones.
If it’s not working, it’s usually one of these:
Your hotspot is on, but other devices can’t join
Devices join, but it says “No internet”
Your phone is using the wrong SIM for data (it happens constantly)
Data roaming / APN is wrong (Ubigi often needs roaming ON)
If you’re still deciding what to buy (or you need a backup option), start here

60-second checklist (do this before anything else)
Do these in order. It fixes most hotspot issues without drama:
Confirm your phone is using Ubigi for mobile data (not your home SIM)
Turn Data roaming ON for the Ubigi eSIM (yes, even in Japan)
Toggle Airplane mode ON → OFF
Restart your phone
Turn hotspot OFF → ON again
On the device you’re connecting (laptop/iPad/other phone), “Forget network” and re-join
If you’re travelling with a dual SIM setup, the #1 issue is simply: your phone is quietly using the wrong SIM for data.
How to use Ubigi hotspot in Japan (iPhone)
Step 1: Make sure Ubigi is your data line
Settings → Mobile Service
Tap Mobile Data
Select Ubigi (or whatever you named the Ubigi eSIM)
Step 2: Turn on Personal Hotspot
Settings → Personal Hotspot
Turn on Allow Others to Join
Set a Wi‑Fi password
Connect your other device to that hotspot network
iPhone gotchas (the annoying ones)
If devices connect but nothing loads: toggle Data roaming for the Ubigi line, then restart.
If your iPhone has “Low Data Mode” on, try turning it off temporarily while tethering.
If you’re using a physical SIM + Ubigi eSIM: double-check Mobile Data is still set to Ubigi after any restart.
How to use Ubigi hotspot in Japan (Android)
Android menus vary slightly by brand, but the logic is the same.
Step 1: Force Ubigi as your mobile data SIM
Settings → Network & Internet (or Connections) → SIMs / SIM manager
Set Mobile data to Ubigi
Make sure Data roaming is ON for Ubigi
Step 2: Turn on hotspot
Settings → Hotspot & tethering
Turn on Wi‑Fi hotspot
Set a password and connect your other device
Android gotchas (common)
Some Android phones “snap back” to the physical SIM for data. If hotspot isn’t working, go back and re-check Mobile data = Ubigi.
If devices connect but show “No internet”, you’ll usually fix it with the symptom-based steps below (especially the restart + roaming toggle).
Ubigi hotspot not working? Fix it by symptom
Symptom 1: Other devices can’t see your hotspot / can’t join
Try this sequence:
Turn hotspot OFF → ON
Change hotspot name + password (yes, really)
Restart the device you’re trying to connect (laptop/tablet/phone)
Restart your phone
Try connecting via USB tethering (Android) if you’re desperate
Symptom 2: Devices connect but say “No internet”
This is the most common one. Do this in order:
Airplane mode ON → OFF
Confirm Mobile data = Ubigi (not your home SIM)
Toggle Data roaming OFF → ON for Ubigi
Restart your phone
“Forget network” on the other device and reconnect
If it still doesn’t work, go to the APN section below.
Symptom 3: Ubigi works on your phone, but hotspot feels blocked/limited
If your phone has data and apps load fine, but tethering is acting cursed, it can be:
device/OS behaviour
a settings conflict
or just one of those travel tech moments where you’re burning time you don’t have
If you need hotspot for work and it’s still not stable after the fixes here, I’d stop troubleshooting and switch to a backup option. Here’s my comparison guide
Symptom 4: No service / no data at all (not just hotspot)
That’s not a tethering problem, it’s a connection/setup problem. Use this guide
APN settings (only if you’re still stuck)
I’m not going to tell you to randomly change settings for fun. But if you’ve done the checklist + restarts + roaming toggle and tethering still shows “No internet”, APN is the next place to look
What to know: Ubigi usually configures itself automatically. If yours didn’t, redoing setup often fixes it faster than digging through menus.
Start here (setup guide)
If you still want to check APN:
iPhone (APN)
iPhone is limited here, you often won’t see editable APN fields for eSIMs. That’s why the “redo setup / restart / roaming toggle” route is usually the fix.
Android (APN)
Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Ubigi
Go to Access Point Names (APN)
If there’s an Ubigi APN, select it
If you’ve edited things previously, consider resetting network settings (see next section)
Nuclear option (when you’ve wasted enough time)
If you’re still stuck:
Reset network settings (iPhone/Android option)
Restart
Re-check Mobile data = Ubigi
Re-enable hotspot
And if you’re travelling and you need internet now, I’d rather you have a working connection than a perfect troubleshooting story. Use a backup provider option.
When I’d stop troubleshooting (and what I’d do instead)
I’d stop and switch approach if:
You’ve restarted, toggled roaming, confirmed Ubigi is the data SIM, and it still won’t tether
You need hotspot for work today
You’re losing an hour of your trip to settings menus
If you haven’t bought yet (or you’re buying again), start here
FAQs
Does Ubigi allow hotspot/tethering in Japan?
In most cases, yes. If it’s failing, it’s usually a settings/SIM selection issue rather than “Ubigi doesn’t support it”.
Why does my hotspot connect but not load anything?
Usually because your phone is using the wrong SIM for mobile data, or because data roaming/APN needs a reset. Follow the “No internet” steps above.
Do I need data roaming on for Ubigi in Japan?
Often, yes. It feels wrong to turn roaming on, but Ubigi commonly requires it to connect properly.
Will hotspot drain my battery faster?
Yes, a lot faster. If you’re tethering for hours, keep a power bank handy (and don’t pretend you’ll “just use Low Power Mode” and be fine).
